Biografía Richard Barthelmess nació en Nueva York nuna familia d'actores. So madre yera una actriz de teatru. Estudió nel Trinity College en Connecticut al tiempu qu'apaecía n'obres d'esi mesmu colexu. Nes vacaciones de 1916, una collacia de so madre, l'actriz Alla Nazimova, ufrió-y un personaxe nel film War Brides (1916). Richard enxamás volvió al colexu. Apaecio en muches películes hasta qu'en 1919 firmó un contratu con D.W. Griffith. Griffith colocó a Richard na película Broken Blossoms (1919) con Lillian Gish convirtiéndolu nuna estrella. En 1942 Richard alistóse na Reserva Naval y cuando la guerra finó retiróse a Long Island, Nueva York onde vivió hasta que morrió en 1963.

El 18 de xunu de 1920 casó con Mary Hay, tuvieron una fía xuntos, Mary Barthelmess. Divorciáronse en 1927 y en 1928 casó con Jessica Stewart Sargent, tuvieron xuntos hasta que Richard morrió en 1963.
