Morfologia Les aletes dorsal i anal es troben cobertes de pell. Absència d'aletes pectorals. Mandíbula inferior recta (la boca tanca completament en totes les espècies del Pacífic oriental, llevat de Gymnothorax verrilli). Dents molt esmolades i, només algunes, allargades.
