Capoeta est un genre de poissons d'eau douce de la famille des cyprinidés originaire du Proche Orient. Leur aire de répartition va de la Turquie et la Palestine jusqu'à la Transcaucasie, l’Irak, le Turkménistan, l’Arménie (notamment dans le lac Sevan) et même le nord de l’Afghanistan. Cette espèce est très voisine du barbeau Luciobarbus et se divise elle-même en trois groupes ou clades morphologiquement, biogéographiquement et génétiquement distincts : le clade mésopotamien, le clade anatolo-iranien et le clade aralo-caspien. Depuis 2022, le clade mésopotamien a été rebaptisé Paracapoeta.

L'espèce Capoeta schuberti n'est pas reconnue officiellement. Ce n'est pas un poisson connu dans la nature et il s'agit soit d'une hybridation ou d'une sélection à partir de Puntius semifasciolatus.
