A 18ª entrega dos premios Óscar tivo lugar o día 7 de marzo de 1946 no Grauman’s Chinese Theatre dos Ánxeles. Os mestres de cerimonias foron James Stewart e Bob Hope. Foi a primeira cerimonia trala segunda guerra mundial e tivo máis glamour que as anteriores. As estatuas de xeso que se entregaran durante on anos de guerra foron substituídas por estatuas de bronce chapadas en ouro.
A fin de semana perdida foi o primeiro filme que gañou o Óscar ao mellor filme e a Palma de Ouro do Festival de Cannes e The Bells of St. Mary's foi a primeira secuela candidata ao Óscar principal.
