A köles (Panicum) az egyszikűek (Liliopsida) osztályának perjevirágúak (Poales) rendjébe, ezen belül a perjefélék (Poaceae) családjába tartozó nemzetség.
Elterjedése A köles-fajok világszerte előfordulnak, leginkább a trópusokon, bár egyes fajai az északi mérsékelt övben is fellelhetők.
