L'NHL All-Rookie Team è scelta dai membri della Professional Hockey Writers' Association al termine della stagione regolare fra i migliori giocatori rookie della National Hockey League divisi per ciascun ruolo. Il primo NHL All-Rookie Team fu selezionato al termine della stagione 1982-83.

La formazione ideale comprende un portiere, due difensori e tre attaccanti. Per essere considerati rookie nella NHL i giocatori devono essere eleggibili per la conquista del Calder Memorial Trophy: non devono aver disputato più di 25 partite in NHL in una stagione precedente o in più di sei incontri nelle due stagioni precedenti, inoltre al 15 settembre non devono aver ancora compiuto 26 anni d'età. Il limite di età fu introdotto nel 1990, dopo che il russo Sergej Makarov conquistò il trofeo all'età di 31 anni.

L'unico giocatore capace di vincere il Calder Trophy senza essere mai stato inserito nell'All-Rookie Team è Pavel Bure; infatti nella stagione 1991-1992 ricevette diversi voti sia come ala destra che come ala sinistra, non a sufficienza tuttavia per meritare un posto nel sestetto ideale in nessuna delle due posizioni.Romain and Duplacey 1994, p. 102 Da allora le norme sono cambiate in modo che gli attaccanti possano essere scelti indipendentemente dal ruolo ricoperto.
