Брукс в 1980-х годах писал кантри-песни, в том числе, записал в соавторстве хиты № 1 «I'm Only in It for the Love» в исполнении John Conlee, «Modern Day Romance» группы Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, и «Who's Lonely Now» группы Highway 101.
Выбор оказался удачным и уже первый сингл дуэта Brooks & Dunn, названный, «Brand New Man», достиг первого места в кантри-чарте Hot Country Songs в сентябре 1991 году.
