Он много путешествовал по Африке в 1949—1950 и 1957—1958 годах и с тех пор посещал континент почти каждый год. В 1953, 1957 и 1961 годах организовал международные конференции по истории и археологии Африки, которые во многом способствовали превращению африканистики в академическую дисциплину.
В 1963 году провёл опрос 250 работающих учёных-африканистов Великобритании и основал (ASAUK), став в 1966—1967 годах её четвёртым президентом. В 1973—1993 годах также являлся президентом .
